Fiddling with Size While Rome Burns…or Falls to Ruin, or…um…Something Like That

I’m pleased to report that this top survived multiple reduction surgeries to emerge in wearable form! Thank goodness, because I just love this floral-and-roman-ruins fabric. It started off as Burda’s Keyhole Batwing Blouse (05/2015 #111) but you’ll notice my version doesn’t really look anything like it, starting with the fact that there’s no keyhole anywhere to be found. Burda’s version is incredibly long. My first … Continue reading Fiddling with Size While Rome Burns…or Falls to Ruin, or…um…Something Like That

McCall’s 6752: Oversized top with cowl neck

This is McCalls’ 6752, a super-baggy top with a cowl neckline and gathered waist with zipper. I made it with “Patriot Blue Ikat Cotton-Viscose Jersey” I ordered from Mood. I thought I was getting 2 yards but I got 2 ‘panels’, which meant two separate, small pieces of fabric that barely made this top. I have a love/hate relationship with Mood. Love the fabrics. Hate … Continue reading McCall’s 6752: Oversized top with cowl neck

A Tour of my New Fabric Stash, in Which There Are No Fewer than Two References to Farts

I picked up a few new fabrics! Let me take you on a tour and maybe you can help me decide what to make. I found them all at Designer Fabrics on Queen Street West here in Toronto while on a BLIND FABRIC DATE with someone from Vancouver! I’ll keep you in suspense about that until the end of the post. 😛 Also, hello and … Continue reading A Tour of my New Fabric Stash, in Which There Are No Fewer than Two References to Farts

The Please, No Wind Beneath My Wings Dress

This is a franken-dress based on a bit of both the Burda Raglan Darted Dress (03/2015 #120B) and the Short Sleeve Maxi Dress (03/2015 #122). I used the hem length of the former pattern and the stretch jersey fabric and a pocket from the latter pattern. I mail-ordered this Missoni-inspired jersey fabric from Mood back in February (but I just checked they seem to be … Continue reading The Please, No Wind Beneath My Wings Dress

Excuse me ma’am, there’s a little sumthn sumthn on your shirt

Notice anything unusual about this fabric? Look carefully. Or maybe not even that carefully. Yeah, that. I think it’s supposed to look like a knot in the wood grain. Alas, it calls to mind something else entirely. I didn’t notice this when I bought the fabric…I was just excited about the ombré effect and the wood grain pattern. It wasn’t until I got it home … Continue reading Excuse me ma’am, there’s a little sumthn sumthn on your shirt

Goin’ out in my birthday suit, courtesy of Vogue 8998

Last month I had a birthday (um, 29th, of course) so I decided to ‘treat’ myself to a new me-made dress. I put ‘treat’ in quotation marks because somehow I never seem to remember that sewing takes longer than I think it should, and that having a hard deadline — a birthday party starting at 8:30 on the Saturday night on which I was trying … Continue reading Goin’ out in my birthday suit, courtesy of Vogue 8998

Burda 6910 Dress: all party on one side, all artsy on the other

This is the last thing I made in 2014 — I put the finishing touches on it on December 31st. I cut the front and back pieces so the pattern on the fabric kinda matched up — I’m a zebra if you look at me sideways from the right. I love the mix of horizontal and vertical irregular stripes. The pattern is Burda 6901, a … Continue reading Burda 6910 Dress: all party on one side, all artsy on the other

2014: A Year of Living Creatively

Was 2014 a creative year for you? A handful of years ago I remember making a list of what I thought were the primary areas in life that were important for happiness & well being. Something like this: Relationship/Marriage Family Friends/Social Life Health Career Creativity Learning Spirituality (although I’m not a religious person, I still consider spirituality to be an important factor) … There were … Continue reading 2014: A Year of Living Creatively
